MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has urged the leaders of the regional states to accelerate the parliamentary elections ahead of the presidential election which is slated for 10 October this year.
During an online meeting with the leaders, Roble emphasized the need to refrain from delaying elections once again, according a statement by the office of the prime minister.
The meeting was attended by leaders of Puntland, Jubbaland, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Southwest and the mayor of Mogadishu.
“An online meeting between the leaders of the National Consultative Council chaired by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble tonight focused on accelerating the country’s electoral process,” the statement reads in part.
The leaders also talked about the ongoing scuffle over the formation of the members of the election committee for the seats of the Federal Parliament in the northern regions.
“Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble briefed the leaders on the progress of resolving the dispute over the election of the leadership of the Northern Regional Electoral Commission from Somaliland,” the office said. “The council fully supported the Prime Minister’s efforts to complete the formation of the Chairman of the Northern Electoral Commission and today the Prime Minister informed the members of the commission to immediately elect their leadership.”
The meeting comes hours after Somali prime minister disbanded two rival committees separately formed by deputy prime Mahdi Guled and the Upper House speaker, Abdi Hashi.
