MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali Women will soon have a reason to smile thanks to Somali prime minister’s pledge to reserve 30% of seats for women in next election.
Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said his government will make sure 30% of parliamentary seats to be reserved for women.
Currently, women hold 24% of the 329 seats in Somalia’s lower and upper houses of parliament.
“Somalia Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble assured that the Federal Government of #Somalia is committed to ensuring a 30% quota for women in both houses of Somali parliament for the upcoming elections …,” government spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu said on Twitter on Sunday.
The pledge by PM Roble follow a meeting with made the quota pledge after talks with female lawmakers whose parliamentary termed lapsed last month.

Somali women rights groups have been demanding the government to implement 30% women quota, which could increase the number of women seats in the parliament.
