Somali Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Kheire and U.S. Deputy Secretary State, John Sullivan on Wednesday met in Washington after the conclusion of 2018 Fragility Forum, US Mission in Somalia has confirmed.
Prime Minister Kheire and Sullivan discussed wide range issues including development, security and the relations between the two countries.
“Today, Deputy Secretary John Sullivan met with @SomaliPM Hassan Ali Khayre to reaffirm the enduring U.S.-Somalia partnership and discuss development, good governance, and efforts to counter-terrorism,” US Mission in its twitter account.
For his part, Prime Minister confirmed the meeting on his twitter account saying he discussed with the deputy on means to strengthen the partnership between Somalia and United States.
“Met with US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan where we discussed ways of further strengthening the partnership between the two countries and the U.S. support for Somalia’s development,” the prime minister confirmed.
The two countries have trying to improve their diplomatic relations since 2012.
The US provided Somalia with roughly $2 billion in development aid and humanitarian relief during the past decade and additional of $900 million to support the country’s peace restoration process.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday pledged that his country will give more than $533 million in humanitarian aid to several countries in Africa including Somalia.
