MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) Members of Somalia’s Lower House have today passed a resolution to extend the government term for two years.
In today’s session, 149 lawmakers have voted by show of hands to approve the resolution.
The endorsed resolution gave Somalia’s National electoral Commission two years ultimatum to hold elections in the country.
The decision by the parliament was welcomed by president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
The extension comes hours after the immediate former Banaadir police boss, Sadak Omar Hassan aka Sadak John suspended parliamentary session in Mogadishu.
Sadak John asked the members of the parliament to seek fresh mandate from their people, saying he was against any term extension.
Sadak John said he took the decision to suspend today’s parliament session to avoid violence and power grab.
“I’m responsible for and in charge of Mogadishu security, all parties, whether government or opposition will be treated equally before the law,” he said.
Hours later, he was fired by Somali police chief, Abdi Hassan Hijar, who replaced him with Farhan Mohamed Aden, aka Farhan Qarole.
