MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The federal parliament of Somalia has unanimously approved a bill that seeks to establish Somali National Registration and Recognition Agency on Monday.
All 143 members present voted for the draft bill submitted as no legislator opposed.
The bill will be submitted to the office of the President for presidential assent before it becomes a law.
Somalia currently lacks a unified national identification system which is key to strengthening peace and security in the country.
Former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire appointed Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein to serve as the first Director-General of the National Identification Authority in July this year.
In May 2018, Somalia and Pakistan signed a USD 10.5 million contract for the development of the national ID system.
Islamabad will provide technical assistance and technology transfer for the development of Somalia’s National Identification System.
According to the agreement, Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will develop and supply technology, software, and equipment to enable the Government of Somalia to have a state-of-the-art national data and citizen registration system.
