MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali members of parliament have approved an amendment to the Somali central bank law on Monday after contentious debate.
Out of 175 members present during the session, 158 voted for the amendment while 17 members rejected.
The new amendment will now allow foreign nationals to hold the Somali central bank chairmanship unlike before where revised law only permitted Somali citizens to hold the post.
The approval comes amid unconfirmed reports by the local media about the possibility of foreign national to be appointed as the chairman of the central bank of Somalia.
Meanwhile, the parliament has also approved an amendment to the auditor general’s office.
At least fifteen articles concerning the office of the Auditor General were reviewed on Saturday parliamentary session.
Article four sub-article two that touches explicitly on the re-organisation of the office was amended in the process.
The auditor general, Mohamed Mohamud Afgoye thanked members of the parliament for the approval saying the move is a step forward for the country.
“My appreciations go to the members of the federal parliament for approving the amendment on the office of the auditor general that was last modified in 1972,” the auditor general posted on his Facebook account shortly after approval by the parliament.
