MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali National Salvation Forum (NSF) has urged AU to withdraw Amisom head of political affairs Taiwo Babatunde in the AU mediation team tasked to take part in resolve of Somalia’s political crisis.
Terming him a ‘toxic influence’ in Somali politics, NSF in a letter said the AU Commission chairman Moussa Faki that Taiwo’s inclusion risks eroding the AU mediation team’s confidence.
“Mr. Taiwo is well known to the NSF as a toxic influence in Somali politics: he serves as a proxy for Villa Somalia’s influence, is a paid agent of the National Intelligence and Security Agency and is a notorious broker of confidential information,” NSF said in the hard-hitting letter to Faki.
The opposition requested Taiwo be reassigned to another AU department or mission.
The NSF applauded the decision of the AU Peace and Security Council to appoint a Special Envoy to assist in the facilitation of dialogue between Somali political stakeholders to finalize agreement upon the framework and modalities for the conduct of indirect elections for a new Federal Parliament and President with the last possible delay.
“We commend the AU’s initiative in seeking to support constructive intra-Somali dialogue and again express our gratitude for the organization’s determination to restore peace, security and legitimate government to Somalia,” the letter said.
The National Salvation Front is an umbrella of over twelve presidential candidates, Jubbaland and Puntland states and the pro-union Somaliland politicians.
