GALKAYO (Halbeeg News) – Somali military court has today sentenced an al-Shabaab man to death for taking part in a well-coordinated raid on a controversial religious centre in Somalia’s central town, Galkayo.
Heavy armed al-Shabaab fighters had last year attacked on the compound of a controversial cleric Abdiweli Ali Elmi.
Abdullahi Ali Mohamed who was said to be part of the fighters was captured by Somali forces who broke the siege.
Mohamed who had sustained injuries during the raid was treated by the Somali government before he was brought before a military court. He was charged with terrorism and murder.
The military has today found him guilty of terrorism and taking part in the murder of over 10 people in Galkayo town.
According to a statement by the court, Mohamed was given a month to seek an appeal to challenge the verdict.
On26th of November last year, al-Shabaab fighters rammed a car bomb into the gate of the headquarters of the Sufi cleric Sheikh Abdiweli Ali Elmi followed by storming the compound, killing Elmi and 14 of his congregation.
