BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – Somali Lower House Speaker, Mohamed Mursal Sheikh accompanied by with his first deputy, Abdiweli Sheikh Mudey had met with traditional elders in Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of Southwest State.
The two officials arrived in Baidoa town last week to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Southwest State president Abdulaziz Hassan Mohamed.
The meeting between the sides has focused on reconciliation efforts to end political differences in the state as well the whole nation.
The council of elders who were crucial in the formation process of Southwest state six years ago pledged to continue their role in peacebuilding and stabilization in the state.
“My office is ready to sit down (Meet) and listen to all sides and resolve the issues amicably in order to move forward,” the speaker said. “Elders must remember that they are the main pillars of the people and government in this country.”
The meeting with elders comes just one month after skirmishes in Baidoa following the arrest of a regional election candidate, Mukhtar Robow on December.
More than 10 people are said to have been killed in the violent clashes between the security agencies and the supporters of the former Al- Shabaab figure.
