MOGADISHU(Halbeeg-News)- The Federal Government of Somalia through the ministry of health and social services has launched the national micronutrient survey in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Education Fund on Wednesday.
The four months’ survey includes the collection of critical health, nutrition and behavioural data related to micronutrient at household level across the regions in Somalia.
Health and social services minister, Fowzia Abikar Noor thanked partners for the supporting the program saying the survey is key to the improving the wellbeing of the mothers and their newborns in the country.
“In order to improve the healthcare of mothers and new-borns we need to understand the level of malnutrition to reduce the loss of life,” the minister said. “other countries conduct maternal survey after every five years to improve health services.”
Somalia is among countries that register a huge loss in the maternal health sector.
The survey is first of its kind conducted across the country since 2009.
The study is expected to provide more information about the state of malnutrition mainly among the mothers and children,and for more action to be taken at the end of the four month long research.
