MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government will investigate a violent incident in Mogadishu prison which claimed lives of inmates and guards, official said.
At least 10 people, including security forces and inmates were killed and several others sustained inuries in a gun battle inside the central prison in the capital Mogadishu on Monday.
Sources confirmed fighting erupted after inmates snatched guns from guards before engaging in gunfight against Somali forces.
Speaking to the state owned media, Justice minister, Hassan Hussein Haji said the authorities managed capture some of the fighters alive.
“We are living no stone unturned, the goverment is investigating how this happened and who responsibility for what happened as well as who facilitated the inmates to get the weapons,” the minister said.
The minister vowed that the authorities will make sure those responsible to face the justice.
“We have captured of the fighters alive with some sustaining injuries, they will interrogated therefore anybody responsible for what happened will be taken to court,” he said.
Hajji assured that the government will come up with policies and measures to protect the safety of inmates and guards.
“We ensure to protect lives of the inmates and the safety of the prison. New safety policies will be introduced,” he noted.
