MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly denied claims by activists that it was responsible for the internet blackout experienced across the country from Sunday till the early hours of Tuesday.
Internet watchdog Netblocks linked the shutdown to the political environment in the country following the dismissal of the Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire government by the parliament on Saturday via a vote of no confidence.
According to the Minister of Telecommunication Abdi Anshur, the blackout which was later restored was as a result of shunt fault on submarine internet cable caused by windy conditions along Somali shores of the Indian Ocean.
Somalia’s largest telecommunication company which provides net services has since apologized for the error after restoration.
“We are glad to inform you that our internet service is fully restored in the areas that were affected by yesterday’s disruption in the network. Once again, we would like to apologize for the disruption and thank you for your patience.”
Several online business services including the banking system were affected by the lack of network during the two days’ interruption.
