MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has dismissed claims that al-Shabaab fighters killed several soldiers in southern Somalia.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ismael Mukhtar Omar, information ministry spokesman said Somali military repelled attack al-Shabaab attack and no casualties occurred during the fighting.
Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters on Wednesday stormed SNA base in Daynunay village on the outskirts of Baidoa town.
“There were no soldiers killed in fighting between Somali forces and al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia,” the spokesman said.
But on contrary, South west state leader Lafta-gareen offered his condolences to the officers and soldiers who were killed in the al-Shabaab attack in Deynunay, Bay region, without mentioning the real casualties.
The development comes barely hours after al-Shabaab fighters claimed to have killed five soldiers including a commander.
“The forces of Mujahideen have took control of military base belonging to apostates. The forces also succeeded to a commander named Yussuf Borweyne,” the statement reads in part.
With support of troops from African Union, Somali military succeeded to pushed al-Shabaab militants out of many major towns including the capital, Mogadishu.
The group which now controls parts of south and central Somalia carries out deadly bomb attacks and raids on government offices, restaurants frequented by government officials, military bases and African Union troops.
