The second batch of Somali migrants freed from Libyan jails are expected to arrive in Mogadishu in the forthcoming days.
Somalia’s ambassador to EU, Ali Saed Fiqi said 13 Somalis who were stranded in Libya have been convinced to voluntarily return to Somalia.
“These young boys were released from the Libyan jails and they will be repatriated to Mogadishu. They will be stopping over at Tunis and Stanbul airports before proceeding to Mogadishu,” said Fiqi.
The ambassador’s sentiment comes less than two weeks after Somali government repatriated eleven Somalis including women and children from Libya.
Somali government is leading a repatriation programme which is jointly coordinated by UNHCR and IOM.
The voluntary registration of Somali migrants was started last December by Somalia’s Belgium embassy in collaborating with IOM.
Over 5,000 Somali migrants who want to set off for the perilous journey to reach Europe are stranded in Libya, according Somalia’s Special Envoy for Migrants and Children’s Rights, Maryam Yasin.
