Somali government has responded to allegations made by a federal Lawmaker that the security opened fired on him last week.
In a statement by the Ministry for Security, the government confirmed the incident saying a soldier fired a single warning shot after a car passed through a checkpoint by the government forces.
“The Ministry for Security of Somali Federal Government shares with the public and the member of the People’s House about an incident which took place yesterday (23rd of May) at 5:30 pm at the checkpoint manned by the government forces at KM0 in Mogadishu, Only one shot was fired in air by a soldier after he suspected a car which passed through the checkpoint,” the statement reads in part.
The Ministry said the government launched investigations into the incident.
“The Ministry clarifies that it started investigations into the incident,” said the ministry.
On 23rd this month, Abdullahi M Nor, the Secretary of the parliamentary committee on Budget and Finance said the forces fired at his car after he left the checkpoint.
“Today 5:10 pm my driver stopped by NISA (National Intelligence and Security Agency) & I promptly identified myself as soon as they let us go, NISA guards started shooting at us without any provocation and luckily survived, Alhamdulillah,” Nor wrote on his Twitter account.
Nor served as the state minister for Finance in the government led by the former Prime Minister Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke.
