The government of Somalia has identified a man suspected to have abducted a senior German aid worker in Mogadishu.
A female staff member of the International Committee of the Red Cross was kidnapped last night from the agency’s base in the Somali capital.
Speaking to the media, the spokesperson of Somalia’s Ministry of Internal Security, Abdiaziz Hildhiban has identified the suspected kidnapper as Mohamud Mohamed Alas.
Hildhiban said the man who allegedly kidnapped the aid worker was one of the guards of the organization.
“We gave a chase to the vehicle of the abductor till Tarbuka Square. One of the security guards of the ICRC who was identified as Mohamud Mohamed Alas, was behind the abduction of the female aid worker,” Hildhiban said.
The spokesman vowed that the security forces will rescue the victim.
“We have launched investigations into the case and we pledge that we will hunt down the criminals,” he told the reporters.
The victim whose name was not disclosed to media was reportedly kidnapped shortly after 8 pm (local time) by armed who entered Red Cross Compound, according to the agency.
In a statement by the agency, Daniel O’Malley, ICRC’s deputy head of delegation for Somalia said German nurse working for International Committee of the Red Cross has been abducted in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
“We are deeply concerned about the safety of our colleague, She is a nurse who was working every day to save lives and improve the health of some of Somalia’s vulnerable people,” said O’Malley.
The government of Germany has not yet commented on the abduction of one of its citizens in Mogadishu.
