The Somali government has disbursed $500,000 tranche to humanitarian Response for flood-hit areas in central and south Somalia after Jubba and Shabelle Rivers breached their banks.
Speaking at the Flood Respond Committee meeting in Mogadishu, Somali Deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Mohamed Guled said the government contributed half a million USD to deal with the intensifying humanitarian crisis in the country.
“Reports we have already received from the ground show that the floods affected more other areas thus the government decided to pay out half a million USD to support the victims of the floods,” said Guled.
Early this week, the government released one million USD which earmarked for flood-affected areas.
The committee who was tasked to implement the government’s efforts to help had so far handed over 100,000 USD to Hirshabelle state to deal with the crisis.
The amount which was disbursed by the Banadir Administration was the first tranche of millions of USD appealed to help the victims.
According to the UN, over 200,000 people have been displaced in the country’s riverine areas after the two main rivers breached its banks.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo who visited Beledweyne town last week described the situation as a national disaster and appealed for international assistance to deal the escalating humanitarian crisis.
