Somali government has officially confirmed that its security forces seized 9.6 million USD stashed three bags from a Plane.
In a statement, the ministry of Internal Security said the security officials at the airport confiscated the three suit cases from the Boeing 737 plane which landed at Adan Adde International Airport later on Sunday.
“The plane was carrying three unmarked bags, the airport officials as normal checked them [the bags] and they saw that (Heaps of) money were stashed in the bags, the officials immediately contacted the Anti-terror unit of National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA),” reads the statement.
The Ministry confirmed the $9.6 million is still under the custody of Somali government as the investigation into the case is underway.
“The amount is 9.6 million USD. The money is now in the hands of Security Agency,the agency will investigate its purpose, the people who are involved and reason why it was imported,” said the ministry.
The statement did not mention where the plane came from but according to reliable sources, the aircraft which was carrying the bags flew from Abu Dhabi.
The money was reportedly destined to the South of the country and Puntland state and has now been taken to the Central Bank as investigation is underway.
According to our sources, the plane was later allowed to take off back to United Arab Emirates (UAE).
