ADADO (Halbeeg News) – Galmudug forces backed by Somali military have recovered a large number of weapons and communication equipment during an operation against al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia, regional minister confirmed Monday.
In a statement, Minister of Internal Security for Galmudug State, Ahmed Fiqi said Galmudug and SNA captured some key areas in Qaycad, in Mudug region following heavy fighting against al-Shabaab fighters.
“We have completely taken control of some key areas in the east and south of Qaycad location in which the militants were trying to secure in recent days. We recovered about 20 guns, communication equipment and other materials this morning,” the minister said in a statement.
In a separate statement, Somali military said at least two hundred al-Shabaab militants were killed and dozens more militants sustained injuries in a three-week-long operation against the group.
The forces also destroyed training bases belonging to al-Shabaab militant group.
“More than 200 Al-Shabab militants were killed, 16 bases destroyed, 4 towns and 8 villages liberated during a three-week anti-terrorism operation conducted by Somali National Army and Galmudug’s regional forces in southern Mudug region,” SNA officials confirmed to Mogadishu Radio.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate organization has not yet commented the claims by Somali military.
