Somali army on Saturday evening killed five al-Shabab fighters and injured several others during fierce fighting with the group in Bay region of southern Somalia.
Sources in Somali National Army (SNA) said the fighting broke out after al-Shabaab attempted to ambush the forces who had just left Burkaba town to Baidoa town in Bay region.
“Somali National Army killed five al-Shabab fighters, injured several others and recovered weapons. Al-Shabaab fighters attempted to ambush the army traveling to Baidoa town, but they were repulsed,” said a military official on condition of anonymity.
He did not say whether there were some casualties on SNA soldiers.
In a separate incident, al-Shabaab ambushed Ethiopian troops traveling along Burhakaba-Baidoa road.
On its side, al-Shabaab claimed to have killed severalĀ Ethiopian soldiers during the attack.
