MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali military soldiers have captured several villages in southern Somalia from Al-Shabaab, an official said on Tuesday.
General Odawaa Yussuf, SNA force commander told the journalists in Mogadishu that the capture followed an operation by the forces, noting there was no resistance as Al-Shabaab fighters vacated the areas following reports of troops’ movement.
“The government forces captured villages in Lower Shabelle region and is now in full control, our soldiers have opened and secured the main road linking Marka of Lower Shabelle region to Mogadishu,” Gen. Yussuf said.
The general vowed that they will continue the operations to liberate areas under the control Al-Shabaab fighters in Southern Somalia.
“Our plan is to liberate other regions where Al-Shabaab fighters are operating. our operations will be continuous until Al-Shabaab is annihilated from Somalia,” he said.
Somali and African Union forces have increased ground and air offensives against the militant group Al-Shabaab in the last few months.
This came as African Union forces have started a conditions-based draw-down from the Horn of Africa nation.
