ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Somali foreign minister, Mohamed Abdirisack on Friday held talks with Bankole Adeoye, African Union commissioner for political, Peace and Security on the sideline of AU Peace and Security Council meeting in Addis Ababa.
In a brief statement, the minister said they had discussed the upcoming elections as the horn of Africa nation kicked off elections for representatives in the Upper House late this week.
“I had a productive meeting with Amb @Bankole_Adeoye the way forward for an accountable, transparent and responsive support mission, AU PAPS Commissioner. We discussed the way forward for an accountable, transparent and responsive support mission. I also briefed the commissioner on the ongoing Somalia federal elections,” the minister said.
Abdirisack had earlier in the day participated in AU Peace and Security Council meeting which focused on a recently released AU report proposing to modification of Amisom Role
“Took part in the 1015 AU Peace and Security Council meeting to discuss the AU Independent Assessment Report. Our message is that support to Somalia should be based on and aligned with Somalia’s priorities,” Abdirisack said.
The Au meeting comes barely two weeks after Somali government rejected proposals to modify the forces for an expanded role.
Somalia Government Spokesman Mohamed Moalimuu said Mogadishu had rejected in totality a report from the African Union (AU) which proposed four ways in which the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) could be modified.
“The Somali government held an inter-ministerial meeting to discuss the report and has rejected from the outset the report’s finding and recommendations and will issue a formal statement,” Moalimuu said.
