MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Somali Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Ambassador Ahmed Isse Awad welcomed the new country director of the UN World Food Programme, Mr. Cesar Arroyo in his office on Sunday.
The two held joint meeting after the presentation of credentials by the new WFP director.
The meeting dealt with the joint cooperation between the Federal Government of Somalia and the World Food Programme focusing on activities throughout the country.
They two sides also discussed encouraging Somali farmers by purchasing their agricultural crops, providing employment opportunities for young people, empowering women and paying attention to remote areas of the countryside to improve their livelihoods to reduce recurrent droughts.
The new WFP Somalia Country Director stressed his office commitment and cooperation with Somalia for the success of strategic axes of activities.
New Initiative enables Somali Farmers to become WFP suppliers. With funding from the government international partners, WFP purchased over 4000 metric tons of maize produced by farmers’ areas that were worst affected by the famine less than three years ago.
