Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – Somali Defense Minister, Abdikadir Mohamed has held talks with Gen. Getachew Fayisa, head of East African Standby Force in Mogadishu.
In a statement, the ministry said the two officials discussed the importance of EASF to the overall peace.
The two officials also discussed the security in the region and the need to fulfill the forces’ mission and vision.
The East African Standby Force was created under the African Union and includes countries beyond the traditional EAC, such as Ethiopia.
Members of EASF include Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
EASF was established as a regional mechanism to provide a capability for the rapid deployment of forces to carry out preventive deployment, rapid intervention, peace support/stability operations and peace enforcement.
The organisation was set up to enhance peace and security in the Eastern Africa region.
It is one of the five regional multidimensional Forces of the African Standby Force (ASF) consisting of Military, Police and Civilian components.
The components stay on standby for rapid deployment at appropriate notice as provided for in the peace support operations scenarios of the ASF.
