MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has reportedly sent two doctors hailing from northern back to Hargeisa town over unspecified reasons.
The two doctors who were heading to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi were reportedly detained at Adan Adde International Airport where they were transiting.
According to sources, the doctors work with Dr. Edna Adan Ismail’s Maternity Hospital in Harigesa.
In a press conference, Dr. Edna Adan Ismail has claimed that the duo had been detained in Somali capital without charges.
“He is a trainee medical worker. He was travelling with a valid Somaliland passport with a valid Kenyan-issued visa”.
She accused Somali government of distorting the passports of the doctors.
“If Somalia knew the law, these transgressors would not have taken their passports or torn them, they would not have been held hostage for three days,” she said.
Somali government has not yet comment on the incident.
Edna Adan Ismail, a former Somaliland foreign minister also served as the special envoy to the Somalia and Somaliland talks.
In 1980 alleged massacres by former autocratic regime of Siad Barre in northern regions had culminated in proposed secession by Somaliland stakeholders.
In 1991, Somaliland announced to have broken with Somalia which formerly consist of former British Somaliland Protectorate and former Italian Somaliland but did not gain international recognition.
The United Nations and global organizations had forced Somalis including stakeholders from Somaliland and Somalia to hold talks to iron out their differences.
In 2011, Somalia and Somaliland had started talks to decide their fate barely 21 years after Somaliland declared to have seceded from the rest of Somalia.
The former Italian colony attained its independence on July 1, 1960 and on the same day it merged with the former British Somaliland Protectorate, which had obtained independence five days earlier on June 26.
