Somali National Army (SNA) on Monday said its troops killed Sixty six Al-Shabaab suspected fighters in Bulamarer town which lies 120km south of Somali capital Mogadishu.
SNA Force Commander, Abdullahi Ali Anod who spoke to the media said the suspected fighters were killed during a gun battle with Al-Shabab.
Over hundred heavily armed Al-Shabab fighters on Sunday carried out simultaneous attacks on SNA military and three Forward Operating Bases of AMISOM in Bulamarer, Golwein and Qoryoley towns in Lower Shabelle region.
“Our forces killed sixty six Al-Shabab fighters who attacked our base in Bulamarer town. The group’s attack was foiled as we have already had intelligence reports on their (Al-Shabab) plan to attack our base,” he noted.
Anod said the forces intercepted Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive device (VBIED) which the group wanted to attack the base.
“Al-Shabab fighters were ferried by three vehicles including a Vehicle Borne Explosive device which the group was planning to attack our base with it but fortunately it was intercepted before it reaced its destination,” he said.
The Force Commander confirmed the injuries of four soldiers.
“Four of our soldiers sustained light injuries from the VBIED blast,” Anod said.
Somali Military recovered 30 weapons including 12 Ak47 riffles, 20 Rocket Propelled Guns and 8 sub machine guns, according to the commander.
Despite the commander’s sentiment on the assault, Al-Shabab which confirmed the Bulamarer attack did not mention any battle which it engaged with Somali army.
The group claimed to have killed 59 AMISOM soldiers in Bulamarer attack.
It also said 16 of its fighters were killed in the attack.
