MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali troops backed by U.S. elite forces on Friday killed Al-Shabaab mid-level commander in Lower Shabelle region, SNA radio confirmed.
The operations against Al-Shabaab in South and Central Somalia have been intensified since early this year when Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo announced new offensives against the group.
Quoting Somali army officials, the military-owned radio said in a covert operation conducted by U.S. and Somali troops eliminated eight Al-Shabaab fighters.
The operations took place in Beledul-Amin and Goobaale villages.
“Danab (Somali commandos) and U.S. forces killed 8 Al-Shabaab fighters among them is Al-Shabaab leader, assigned the task to collect extortions,” the radio reported.
The slain Al-Shabaab leader was identified as Moalim Isack Nurow.
The move comes on the heel of deadly clashes between Somali military and Al-Shabaab fighters.
Al-Shabaab lost many towns to Somali government after the group’s fighters were defeated in several battlefields.
