Beijing (Halbeeg News) – Federal government of Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud held a meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto to discuss a range of critical issues affecting their countries and the broader region.
In the meeting which took place on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit in Beijing, president Mohamud underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing shared challenges and enhancing regional stability and prosperity.
The two leaders emphasized the paramount importance of addressing the threat of international terrorism, which has been a persistent challenge in the region.
Both Somalia and Kenya have faced significant security threats from groups such as Al-Shabaab. President Mohamud highlighted Somalia’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, noting the successes achieved with the support of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
On his part, President Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to supporting regional security initiatives and emphasized the need for continued cooperation to ensure lasting peace.
Climate Change
On climate change issues, the two leaders acknowledged the urgent need to address climate-related challenges, which have exacerbated food insecurity, displacement, and resource conflicts in the region.
The two sides agreed to enhance climate resilience and sustainable development strategies, emphasizing the importance of international support and cooperation in these efforts.
Further, the two leaders stressed the importance of upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the Horn of Africa, and agreed that stability and prosperity in the region are anchored in mutual respect and collaborative efforts to address common challenges.
President Mohamud and President Ruto shows their commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Somalia and Kenya. They highlighted the benefits of continued cooperation on security, climate action, and regional development. President Ruto noted the strong ties between the two countries and expressed optimism about the future of their partnership.
