MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)-Somali National Army Army (SNA) on Saturday said its forces took over villages in Lower Shabelle region after covert security operations against al-Shabaab fighters.
Speaking to the media, Mohamed Abdullahi Araye, the commander of 35th Platoon of 60th Battalion of the SNA said the forces drove al-Shabaab militants from areas near Wanla-weyne town.
According to Araye, the villages are Kaharlow, Ali-Dere, Hawa-adunyo and God-dofar in Lower Shabelle region.
“We have been conducting security operations in Lower Shabelle this week; we secured these villages after al-Shabaab fighters withdrew from their bases in these areas,” he said.
The commander vowed that Somali military will continue the operations to recapture villages controlled by al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle region.
Somali forces with the support of AMISOM troops have been fighting al-Shabaab since 2007 when AU deployed its troops in Somalia to help the government in the fight against the al-Qaeda linked terror group.
Al-Shabaab lost control of many towns including the capital city to allied forces.
Despite losing many major towns to Somali government forces, the group controlled a broad swath of remote areas.
The group carries out hit and run attacks on military bases in South-Central Somalia.
