MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least 20 al-Shabaab fighters were killed on Monday and early Tuesday in fierce fighting in the central region of Mudug, a military officer and governor of Mudug confirmed.
Early Monday morning al-Shabaab fighters stormed Somali military base, prompting fierce fighting that last more than an hour.
Abdurrahman Ali Dirie, governor of Mudug region said al-Shabaab fighters launched an attack on an army base in Ba’ad Weyn town, but the security forces repelled and pushed them back.
“Our forces foiled the militants’ attempt to overrun the base. We killed 12 of them and the army captured some of the attackers alive,” Dirie said, noting that the army is now controlling the base.
Another military officer who spoke the military owned radio said the army launched operation to pursue the attackers of the base.
He said the SNA forces raided an al-Shabaab village near Ba’adweyn and engaged the militants, killing eight fighters and destroying the base.
The claims by SNA cannot be verified as the area is remote with no good communication.
On the side al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack saying their fighters seized vehicles belonging to SNA.
