BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – Somali National Army (SNA) on Monday killed 5 al-Shabaab fighters and injured several others in a fierce fight in the outskirts of Baidoa town in the southern region of Bay, a military officer confirmed.
SNA official who spoke to SNA radio said that al-Shabaab militants launched a dawn attack on a base run by Somali army in Goofgaduud town, but the forces repulsed them.
“The group’s attempt to overrun the base was foiled as the army fought them bravely killing more than five of them including two senior officials and injuring donzen others,” he said.
He confirmed that three government soldiers were killed during the fierce fight between the army and al-Shabaab.
The latest fight came barely hours after al-Shabaab armed stormed upscale hotel in Mogadishu, killing over 16 people and injuring than 40 mostly civilians.
Government forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab in the southern regions in recent months, but the group still maintains ability to carry out deadly bomb attacks in major towns.
Al-Shabaab still hides in the rural areas of south and central regions.
