MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali National Army (SNA) forces have repelled an Al-Shabaab attack on military base on the outskirts of Afgoye town in Lower Shabelle region.
Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters have reportedly stormed the base from different directions, prompting fierce gun battle with Somali military.
The fighting which lasted for more than an hour took place on Sunday evening in Mukayga vicinity just few kilometers away from Afgoye town.
According to the military owned Radio, the group attempted to overrun a military base manned by Somali National Army but were pushed back.
Military officials confirmed that the base is still under the control of Somali army.
African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and SNA forces have been on major offensives against Al-Shabaab in central and southern Somali regions.
But the militants still hold swaths of territory in those regions, conducting ambushes and planting roadside bombs.
