MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali National Army (SNA) forces have repelled an Al-Shabaab attack on military base in Luq town of Gedo region in southern Somalia.
Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters have reportedly stormed the base from different directions, prompting fierce gun battle with Somali military.
According to local who spoke to the media, The fighting which took place on Sunday night lasted for more than an hour.
SNA military officials and local administration in Luq town have not yet commented on the attack.
The attack comes amid African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and SNA forces have intensified offensives against Al-Shabab in central and southern Somali regions.
But the group still hold swaths of territory in central and southern Somalia, conducting ambushes and planting roadside bombs.
Shabaab which once was powerful group had lost almost all its territories including the capital after their fighters were defeated by Somali army backed by AMISOM.
