MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces on Friday recaptured a village from Al-Shabaab fighters following a covert security operation against the group in central Somalia.
In a statement, Mohamed Tahlil Bihi, SNA infantry commander said the forces engaged al-shabaab fighters in Eel-lahelay, a key stronghold of the group near El-Buur town.
“Our forces are advancing to several areas controlled by the militant group in Galgaduud region. On Friday, we took over the control of Eel-lahelay village and in the forthcoming hours, we are expecting to reach far areas in the region,” the commander said.
The move comes hours after SNA forces repelled al-Shabaab attacks on a checkpoint and military base in Mahaday town of Middle Shabelle region.
According a statement by the military, the attacks claimed lives of six people including two SNA soldiers.
Somali forces have recently stepped-up operations against al-Shabaab in central regions of Somalia.
Al-Shabaab fighters have been fighting Somali forces and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops for past decade.
The group lost large swath territories in central and southern Somalia including the capital after its fighters were defeated in deadly gun battles by SNA backed by AMISOM forces.
Al-Shabaab currently controls several towns and villages in Lower and Middle Jubba and Shabelle regions.
