MARKA (Halbeeg News) – The Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers have nabbed 32 Al-Shabab suspected in security operations in Marka town.
Hundreds of military were deployed in the town early Wednesday to comb the town and hunt down Al-Shabaab sympathisers.
Speaking to the media, SNA Force commander Odowa Yusuf Rage said the operations were meant to eradicate Al-Shabaab fighters from Marka town in Lower Shabelle region southern Somalia.
The operations took place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday following several Al-Shabaab attacks on the town.
“Somali National Army arrested 32 Al-Shabaab during military operations in Marka in the past days. Some of them were caught while fighting, the rest are amniyat (secret spy units), bomb experts and tax collectors,” Mr. Rage said.
The Somali National Army, backed by the African Union Mission Troops, re-captured parts of the town from al-Shabaab fighters on Aug. 19.
Somali forces have intensified operations to annihilate Al-Shabaab from southern Somalia.
In 2014, Al-Shabaab lost control of the town, which is situated 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Mogadishu after Somali forces suppoorted by troops from the Ugandan contingent of the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) defeated the fighters of the group.
