MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least two al-Shabaab fighters were killed and several others wounded after heavy fighting with Somali forces in Lower Shabelle region.
In a statement, Somali National Army (SNA) said Somali forces foiled al-Shabaab attacks on a military in the agricultural rich town, Janaale.
The statement further noted that the military inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers, saying the government forces recovered weapons and other military assortment.
“Our forces managed to defeat al-Shabaab fighters after the group attempted to attack our base in the town,” the SNA statement reads part.
According to the residents, the normalcy returned to the town as the government soldiers launched operations to hund down the perpetrators.
Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack saying their fighters killed many soldiers in the attack.
The group has been fighting Somali forces and African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) for the past decade.
In 2011, al-Shabaab lost control of Somali capital following days long fighting with SNA backed by Amisom.
