MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – A senior al-Shabaab commander has been killed and several of his bodyguards sustained injuries following security operation in Lower Shabelle region, Somali military confirmed Saturday.
In a statement, Somalia’s elite forces, Danab said the forces launched operation against al-Shabaab fighters in Aliow-Borow village.
The senior al-Shabaab commander killed in the operation was identified as Nuh Dhagol.
“Our forces killed several al-Shabaab militants including high rank militant commander in security operation. The operation was successful as planned. Al-Shabaab was defeated and was inflicted heavy casualties,” said Hassan Mohamed Osman, the commander of 16th Brigade of Danab.
The operation comes barely two days after Somali forces backed by Kenya forces killed more than ten al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia.
The fighters were killed after they attempted to stormed a base belonging to Jubbaland state in Kuday locality, outside Kismayo town in Lower Jubba region.
Kenya military reinforced Jubbaland state forces by deploying a gunship helicopter and a ground fighting patrol unit.
In recent month, SNA forces stepped up operation against al-Shabaab fighters in central and southern Somalia.
