MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least 60 al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and dozens of others sustained injuries after fierce fighting with Somali national army (SNA) in central Somalia.
According to a statement by Somali military, the government forces launched operations against al-Shabaab in Ali-Qabobe area, approximately 30 km south of the town of Harardhere in the Mudug region.
“The government is committed to eradicate al-Shabaab, our forces killed more than 60 militants and recovered weapons following covert operations in Ali-Qabobe area in Mudug region. The forces will continue hunting down the group’s fighters.
Speaking to the media, Harardhere District Commissioner Mohamed Yusuf Kulmiye said the forces alerted that a vehicle was transporting weapons and armed al-Shabaab fighters in the village.
Somali national army (SNA) backed by clan militias has intensified operations against al-Shabaaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group which was formed more than a decade ago.
The group has been carrying out deadly suicide bombings in major towns including the capital, Mogadishu.
It targeted hotels, restaurants, government institutions, security checkpoints and other civilian areas.
