MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali military on Sunday killed nine al-Shabaab fighters following clash with the group’s fighters in Bay region.
The fighting flared up after heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed SNA base in Qansahdhere town.
Ethiopian forces under the framework of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) dispatched reinforcement to the base.
Abdirisack Adan Aibrahim, the district deputy commissioner who spoke to the media said Somali forces repelled the fighters in a fighting that lasted for more than 30 minutes.
The Commissioner stated that the military had intelligence reports of al-Shabaab attack.
“We received intelligence about the imminent attack and our forces managed to repulse the attack,” Ibrahim said.
The official also confirmed the forces recovered from the attackers.
Al-Shabaab which once controlled large swath territories including the capital Mogadishu was weakened following heavy clashes with Somali military backed by AMISOM.
The group now controls remote area in south and central Somalia but stages deadly attacks on SNA and AMISOM bases across the country.
They carry out the bombs in major towns. The latest attacks happened on Sunday in Mogadishu after a senior military and district Commissioner survived two seperate landmine explosions.
