MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali military has killed high rank al-Shabaab commanders following security operation in south Somali capital.
In a statement, SNA said it’s forces killed Abdiaziz Awowe, commander of the group’s spy wing and head of explosive department who was identified as Abu-khatab in Lower Shabelle region.
The fighters attempted to resist the army but they were defeated, prompting death of six other militants.
According to the statement, the operation took place in Sahan-yarey outside Lego town.
Military officials say the operation was conducted following tip off that the group was carrying out trials against innocent locals.
Al-Shabaab has not comment on the latest raid on their fighters in Lower Shabelle region.
The group lost large territories including the capital city Mogadishu following fierce fighting with Somali military backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
Their fighters were squeezed in remote areas in south and central Somalia.
The group carries out IED attack on both military bases and major towns.
Recently Somali military has intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters to liberate areas under their control.
