MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali National Army (SNA) has killed at least 15 people al-Shabaab fighters and injured more than 20 others after clashes with the group’s fighters in southern Somalia, SNA top official said Friday.
SNA chief Odowaa Yusuf Rageh said security operations conducted in Gallabashiir and Wardhagax villages in Middle Shabelle region have destroyed al-Shabab bases and recover some weapons.
Rageh said the troops who have intensified military operations in the Middle Shabelle region since last week opened fire on al-Shabab’s weapons and ammunitions base, inflicting heavy losses on the extremist group.
The development comes a day after Somali leaders agreed to hold elections in the horn of Africa nation.
The agreement between Somali political stakeholders was secured after six days of talks to iron out the dispute over contentious issues including federal troops in Gedo, Somaliland representative elections, election timetable.
Five regional leaders and mayor of Mogadishu have attended the conference which was chaired by Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.
