MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali national Army (SNA) has destroyed al-Shabaab bases after security operation in central Somalia, State owned media confirmed Tuesday.
In recent months, Somali forces have intensified the fight against al-Shabaab fighters ahead of the country’s parliamentary and presidential elections which are scheduled kick off from late this month.
The forces recaptured dozens of towns and villages in Mudug including Ba’adweyn town following joint operations by Galmudug and federal government troops.
According to SONNA, Somalia’s state-owned media, Somali National Army and Galmudug State regional forces had gained significant ground in southern Mudug region in the past 24 hours.
The troops advanced on Saturday to Al-Shabab’s last stronghold villages of Miiroon and Eryaal, killing several militants and destroying bases.
Early this week, US military has resumed aerial bombardment against al-Shabaab fighters for the first time since US president Joe Biden assumed office.
Last Friday, US government claimed the responsibility for an airstrike against al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia.
The airstrike took place the vicinity of Qeycad, some 300 miles (500 kilometers) north of the capital Mogadishu.
The U.S. carried out 63 airstrikes against al-Shabaab in 2019 and 53 airstrikes in 2020.
Another seven airstrikes were launched in the first two-and-a-half weeks of 2021, before former U.S. President Donald Trump left office.
