WANLAWEYN ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The Somali National Army (SNA) from the 4th Brigade of the 16th Battalion has carried out a planned operation in the Wanleweyn district in the Lower Shabelle region.
The operation destroyed Al-Shabaab bases in Lego, about 50km from Wanleweyn, officials who led the operation told army radio.
Military officials said the troops destroyed centers used by the group to extort money from the members of the public.
The officials added that the troops will continue pursuing the militants in their hideouts in the area.
In recent months, Somali armed forces with support from AU peacekeepers have intensified security operations against al Shabaab on various fronts seizing control of key strategic areas previously controlled by the armed group al Shabaab.
Somali special forces trained by the US popularly known as Danab have also been deployed to new areas to boost the security in countering the group during the electioneering period.
