MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces have killed two senior al-Shabaab leaders in a security operation in southern Somalia.
According to the state-owned media, the forces launched a covert security operation in an area which lies 60km away from Kismayo town.
The two neutralised al-Shabaab leaders are identified as Ahmed Ali Farah and Gedi Warfa Ali. About 21 al-Shabaab fighters were also killed in the operation.
The operation comes barely a day after Somali Amry claimed five al-Shabaab fighters in the Lower Jubba region. The forces also claimed to capture several al-Shabaab operatives in the operations.
The forces arrested another one al-Shabaab operatives.
Last year, the Somali government launched operations to liberate al-Shabaab-controlled areas in southcentral Somalia.
Dozens of towns and villages in Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle, Galgaduud, and Mudug regions.
The government also claimed to have killed hundreds of al-Shabaab fighters since last July.
Despite losing dozens of major towns including the capital, the group still is capable of carrying out deadly attacks against government institutions, hotels, and major towns.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group has been fighting Somali and AU forces in Somalia for the past decade.
