MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces backed by clan militias killed at least 28 al-Shabaab fighters in a security operation in Middle Shabelle region.
According to a statement, Somali military said the operation which took place in the Juhay rural area near Adan Yabal town destroyed Al-Shabaab base and recovered weapons.
“The government forces and the local people jointly conducted an operation targeting al-Shabaab base in Juhay village. 28 al-Shabaab fighters were killed and dozens wounded. The forces also destroyed a camp in the area,” the statement reads in part.
The military did not comment on casualties on its forces and the local militias.
The operation came hours before Somali Prime Minister Hamze Abdi Barre visited a recently liberated town of Adan Yabaal.
The town which was under al-Shabaab control since 2016 was seized by the government forces early this month without resistance from al-Shabaab.
PM Barre held talks with the military commanders in the town and met with some locals in the town.
He discussed with the commanders on ways to rebuild the town’s infrastructure and maintain its security.
Somali military in collaboration with local militias launched operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central regions last July.
The allied forces liberated dozens of villages and towns in Hiiraan, Galgadud and Middle Shabelle regions.
