MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Galmudug forces backed by Somali national army (SNA) have recaptured Amara town after fierce fighting with al-Shabaab fighters, the government spokesperson confirmed Sunday.
In a statement, Somali Government Spokesman Mohamed Moalimuu said the forces seized the central Somalia town in Mudug region following covert operation against al-Shabaab.
According to the statement, the government forces are planning to wrest Sigro village which under the control of Al-Shabaab fighters.
“Galmudug security forces alongside with SNA have now fully captured Amara town from Alshabaab militants after a planned offensive on Sunday morning.Amara is now under the control of the joint forces .Gov.soldiers are now heading to Sigro village controlled by the terror group,” the spokesperson said.
The operation comes day after Somali military in central Somalia claimed to have recaptured the strategic town, Ba’adweyne from Al-Shabaab.
Ba’adweyne town in Galmudug state changed hands in recent weeks.
The military on Saturday also killed a senior al-Shabaab commander in Middle Shabelle region.
In a statement, SNA said Nuh Dhagool, who was leading the operation to extort the local populace to fund the group’s activities in town, was killed Friday night.
“The terrorist was the head of extortion in the coastal area,” the military said in a brief statement.
