Somali National Army and African Union troop will launch an intense security operations in Somali capital Mogadishu and its environs ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
Al-shabab fighters normally stage deadly attacks in the month of Ramadan.
The officials of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said the forces will carry out pre-emptive measures to avert Al-shabab attacks during the holy month.
Speaking to media, AMISOM Contingent Commander for Sector One (Uganda), Brig Paul L’Okech, said the assignment will largely be done by the Somali National Army and the Local Police.
He said AMISOM troops are already vigilant and ready to reinforce the police and other local authorities in case of attacks.
“The Al-Shabaab usually want to use Ramadan to carry out attacks, but we are on ground and all places are already secured,” L’Okech said.
The commander called on the public to collaborate with the security agencies and provide tip off to the officials over suspicious issue.
“We need Somali people to work with Somali security forces and hand in information to improve the security of the town during the month of Ramadan. This is all intended to build harmony, in the run up to Ramadan, but also as a continuous undertaking for long lasting solutions against the Al-Shabaab ,” he urged.
He said SNA and AMISOM commanders in Ceeljalle, Shalamboot and Buufow held continuos back-to-back meetings with local leaders in the pursuit for peace.
