MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least six people including two Somali soldiers have been killed and several others wounded in clashes between Somali military and al-Shabaab fighters in Middle Shabelle region, official confirmed.
Mohamed Osman Ali, police officer in Mahaday town confirmed fighting, saying al-Shabaab fighters launched deadly attacks on SNA and a checkpoint on the outskirts of the town, prompting an hour-long fierce fighting.
“Al-Shabaab militants have carried out twin attacks on the base and the checkpoint on Thursday. Two soldiers and four al-shabaab militants were killed in the attacks. The military repelled the raid and the militants fled,” Ali who spoke to media said on Friday.
In a statement posted on its affiliate media, al-Shabaab claimed to have killed more than five soldiers in the attack.The attack comes days after heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed two military bases in Awdhigle and Bariire in Lower Shabelle region.
The attacks which took hours before al-shabaab was defeated, claimed more than 150 people from both sides.
Brigadier Gen. Mohamed Tahaliil Mohamed Tahaliil, SNA infantry commander said SNA killed 76 militants were killed and ten others were captured in the attack on last Saturday.
The bases are located about 100 km (60 miles) southwest of Mogadishu.
