Shariif Sheikhuna who was elected from Southwest state has announced his candidature to contest for office of the speaker.
The number of candidates vying for the speakership has been looming since last week when former speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari stepped down from the office.
Sheikhuna who spoke to media said he would compete to hold the third powerful office in Somalia.
“Today, 19-04-2018, I am announcing that I am a candidate vying for the office of the speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament,” he said.
He urged the lawmakers to support him with their votes, pledging he would to improve the standard of the House and its sessions.
Sheikhuna had served different positions in previous governments since 1970s.
He once served the position of police chief before he was replaced.
Since Jawari declared his resignation, four candidates including former parliament speaker, Sheikh Adan Mohamed, Somali Defense Minister, Mohamed Mursal Sheikh and Somalia’s Minister for Energy.
