ADDIS ABABA ( Halbeeg News) – Dozens of people have been arrested in connection to a failed coup attempt in Ethiopia’s Amharic region o Saturday, The Prime Minister’s office has said.
Early on Sunday, Brigadier General Tefera Mamo, the head of special forces in Amhara, told state television that “most of the people who attempted the coup have been arrested, although there are a few still at large.
Among them is the bodyguard of Ethiopian national security forces Seare Mekonnen who was killed in his home in Addis Ababa together with retired major General Abera but the mastermind of the failed coup, General Asaminew Tigse is still at large.
Asaminew Tsige was elected to the central committee member of the Amhara Democratic Party (ADP), one of the constituent parties of EPRDF.
The former military officer was arrested on May 2009, and reduced in rank and stripped his decoration for allegedly plotting to assassinate high-ranking government officials.
He was freed nine years later on February 23 as part of the release of political prisoners by Abiy Ahmed’s administration, and he was made to retire with all benefits, his titles reinstated.
Prime Minister Spokeswoman Billene Seyoum said a national committee had been established to organize a military funeral for the Generals killed and provide further information on the situation.
The internet is cut off across the country, and there is little flow of information coming out of the country.
